1. Clean Your Virtual Presence and Environment


Begin by ensuring that your environment reflects professionalism: Choose a clean and clutter-free backdrop, ideally a neutral wall or a simple background. Most programs like Google Meet, zoom or Microsoft Teams have settings where you can blur your background.

Choose a quiet and calm space (definitely not a café!). If there is too much street noise around you, opt for a headset, as it cancels out most surrounding noise.


Pay attention to lighting and position yourself in a well-lit area with natural light, like in front of a window. People want to see your face! Remember to check your laptop’s camera angle so you’re at eye level. It should be at about 90 degrees. Maybe use some books to elevate it!


Your smartphone is not the best device for a professional video call, better use your laptop! If you have to use your phone, get a stand to stabilize it. And make sure there won’t be any incoming calls during the interview!
